Who is Mama Row?
She was my mother. The caramel is her recipe, in her name, and every jar we send still starts with her.
I’m Jonathan Hudson. My mother, Rachell “Mama Row” Hudson, was loving, selfless, and one of the funniest people I’ve ever known. She gave all of it away freely: cooking for people, teaching, raising kids who weren’t hers, taking in family who needed a place to stay.
She was raised on the west side of Chicago, Crane High School class of ’78. After she turned 40 she went back to school — Malcolm X College, Chicago State, then a degree from Lewis University — because she wanted her boys to see it could be done.
She gave me her caramel recipe in 2001. We lost her to lung and liver cancer in 2018. In 2023 I started Mama Row’s Caramel from that recipe, to turn the pain into purpose.
